NATIONAL CENTER OF STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY AND BIOIMAGING - CENABIO/UFRJ

MONTAGEM ingles

The National Center for Structural Biology and Bioimaging (CENABIO) is a multiuser unit of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) that offers studies and experimental approaches to obtain images from organs, cells and biomolecules. It has state-of-the-art equipment, experienced technicians and is managed by highly qualified researchers.

CENABIO’s Unit I, the National Center of Macromolecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (CNRMN), founded in 1998, is the only facility in Brazil that has I am not sure what this qualifier means. Other groups also study structure and dynamics of proteins and other biomolecules.

“Since 2009, CENABIO has been supported as one of Brazil´s premier National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCT), devoted to Structural Biology and Bioimaging (INBEB), and has been granted resources to build a small-animal bioimaging facility that offers the following techniques: luminescence, fluorescence, ultrasound, PET-SPECT-CT and a small-animal nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Thus, in May 2010, CENABIO’s unit II (Small-Animal Imaging Unit) was born.

In addition to the solid multiuser structure already available, Unit III (Advanced Microscopy Center) was built. It is the most complete center in Latin America, in which the following microscopy techniques are available: confocal, super-resolution, multi-photon, TIRF, optical tweezers, atomic force, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy with cryostage, transmission electron microscopy, analytical transmission electron microscopy using X-ray emission spectrum and electron energy loss, transmission electron microscopy operating at 200 KV with cryostage, and an automated cryoelectron tomography system.

CENABIO also has the Advanced Platform for Biomolecules, which is highly specialized in services such as production and analysis of proteins and peptides.

In addition to INCT-INBEB, CENABIO anchors the recently created INCT in Regenerative Medicine (INCT-Regenera), based on a triad that includes stem cells, organic and inorganic matrices and recombinant factors for bioengineering organs and tissues.
